Starting A Online Record Label

Well i kinda toyed with idea for a while a few years ago but didnt do anything about it. But Onthareal Productions have gave me a little urge to re-kinder my former interest. I was speaking about it with my friend (who is an excellent guitarist but left the band he was in as they kept argueing) and we came up with the name " Flying Phoenix Records" (long story behind the name). We thought about making it a multi-genre label and getting a few people we know from our home town to sign and help them publish there stuff. We know a lot of indie orientated people, a few dance heads (but in dance i mean like Daft Punk kinda stuff) and rap (me) and some R&B girls. We thought with a little variety like this we could do well. I will probably stay underground as i have a degree to do but if i ever had enough money to play with i would love to try and push to the distributors and get heard of. I have a few things that still are in my mind though like :-

- What do you all think of the name?
- How much money am i gonna need?

I would especially like to hear from Soldiah on this (and i hope you dont think im trying to rip of Onthareal! if you do then i wont mention this shit here again). But anyone with anything slightly related to this please reply.

tha first thing i would do if i was you is checkin my connections to see if all tha people you hope to get in is down with it and everything so your company dosnt crash when you think its about to go.

then you and your friend shud sit down and think about exactly why you wanna do this and what you are gonna do for your artists when you get them.

then when you have got that down its time for tha fun lol, makin tha web site. If you think this company cud go pretty far, i wud considder registering a real domain (flyingphoenixrecords.com?) so your "fans" wont have to put up wit fucked up pop ups and banners which only pops up to bug you lol. Tha website part we can talk more about later on msn.

then you gotta sign some artists, if you allready know people whos down thats exelent, dont waste your time wit contracts and shit in tha beginnin, thats only if you are plannin on makin serious money, so tha company is based on trust at first which prolly is tha best thing you can do.

so when you got that down, signed a few artists and they have recorded sumfin and burned it on a CD its time for premotion. If you say all tha artist are from your area, your area wud be tha place to start promoting, so make a few flyers, spend a lil money on them to make them look nice and hang them up all around your area. EG: clubs, cenimas(spellin)ect. And if its possible, try to press a lil article in a local news paper. (this will possible cost you some money, but its a good start.
and make SURE that yalls web site addy is included on tha flyer. Make tha flyer noticeble, so dont print it in black and white, people wont notice it then.

Now you have allready gotten pretty far. Now its time to for your artists to play live, research places where they can play some small gigs, maby even open for another local band.

thanks a lot man Im not gonna be doing this to make money but i wanna take a part in music. I love music its what my life revolves around but i dont play no instruments and im not a brilliant rapper so i though about getting in a venture like this would be cool.
